As a PhD scholar from The University of Queensland, Nyakuoy Yak says shyness or introversion should not be seen as roadblock for leadership potential.

The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) visited The Southport School on the Gold Coast last week as concussion baseline testing continued ahead of the 2023 GPS rugby season.

On Wednesday 15 March, the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) hosted a panel discussion at the State Library of Queensland featuring Institute experts to discuss a host of topics around attention and decision making, brain plasticity and the effects of stress on our brain.

"There’s so much about the brain we don’t know anything about, and we hope our involvement with QBI increases our understanding of what really is the most complex organ in the universe” - Garry Waugh.

Mr Leslie (Les) Coak left a generous gift of $280,000 in his will to advance Parkinson’s disease research at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI).  

When Nudgee College Sports Injury Coordinator Christine Atchison learnt about the Queensland Brain Institute’s concussion study, she was interested immediately. “I deal with many different injuries on sports days and during competitions, but head knocks worry me the most,” Christine said.

Over the summer holidays, the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) welcomed three high school interns – Anna Thomas, Mia Makkinga and Rachel Rabuya – who joined the Balbi, Tye and Fenlon/Suarez’s labs for a whirlwind week of neuroscience immersion.  

Since 2017, Janice Rushworth has led three groups of fundraisers to trek through beautiful Australian locales, all while raising money to support QBI PhD students in their research of Alzheimer’s disease. 

A young school rugby player has become the first participant in a study which could help improve the sport.

Colin Illingworth’s passion for learning and education will fuel the next generation of inquisitive minds after his estate bequeathed more than $310,000 to the Queensland Brain Institute.

“When Ian passed away from dementia in 2018, we wanted to do something significant and inspiring that would touch on his legacy. The decision to memorialise him through a scholarship at the Queensland Brain Institute was unanimous and helped us get through our grief.”

“We feel as though we have the means to make a difference, to invest in the future of our country and planet”, Di says.
