Understanding how neuronal activity and synaptic function produce and are shaped by behaviour is a fundamental goal of neuroscience. Similarly, improved treatments for mental and neurological disorders will rely on gaining a better appreciation for how the brain coordinates activity across synaptic, circuit and system scales.
