Professor John McGrath is a distinguished clinician and researcher at the forefront of global mental health research. Conjoint Professor at UQ's Queensland Brain Institute, Director of the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research and Neils Bohr Fellow at Aarhus University in Denmark, John grew up in Brisbane and started his career as a psychiatrist. His research aims to unravel the complexities of mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, and understands the incidence and burden of these conditions. John recently co-led a pivotal international study in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, revealing one in two people will develop a mental health disorder by age 75.

In this fascinating conversation, Professor McGrath discusses:

  • How half of us will develop a mental health disorder by age 75.
  • What epidemiology means and how it helps us understand mental health.
  • The value of discovery science.
  • The beauty of collaboration to reach a common goal.
  • Whether we could prevent mental health disorders in the future.
