QBI Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trek 2021
The QBI Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trek is an unforgettable adventure through one of the most stunning locations – Kangaroo Island.
The trek – categorised as a Grade 4 walking trail – weaves through the most botanically unique area in all of South Australia before reaching the rugged, remote and spectacular coastline of the Southern Ocean.
The QBI Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trek will help raise money for the Alastair Rushworth Fund, which supports a PhD student conducting dementia research at the Queensland Brain Institute.
Janice Rushworth established the Alastair Rushworth PhD Scholarship Fund in 2017 in memory of her husband Alastair Rushworth, who passed away from younger onset dementia in 2016.
There is currently no treatment or cure for dementia, which is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the most prevalent cause of death for Australian women. Dementia affects almost one in 10 people over the age of 65 and research at QBI is providing a pathway to potential treatments to millions worldwide.
In 2021, the primary goal is to raise $32,500 to fund the new recipient of the Alastair Rushworth Scholarship recipient Igor Bonacossa Pereira, who hopes to discover treatments that will assist in the fight against this devastating disease. Over the next four years, the aim is to collectively raise a further $130,000, which will contribute to funding Igor’s four-year PhD scholarship student and research costs.
