Reigning Australian Brain Bee Challenge champion Eva Wang takes on the world’s brainiest students this week at the International Brain Bee (IBB) in Washington DC, USA.
The Year 11 student from Somerville House girls’ school in Brisbane will compete against students from 22 other countries.
Eva won last year’s Queensland final before winning the Australian Brain Bee Challenge title earlier this year, and hopes to follow in the tracks of fellow Australian winners Jackson Huang and Teresa Tang.
Both Jackson – the current IBB champion – and Teresa come from Queensland, so Eva will be looking to keep the crown in Australia.
The IBB seeks to find the student with the most neuroscience knowledge, and promotes neuroscience to high school students.
Topics covered during the competition include brain functions such as sensations, intelligence, emotions, movement, and consciousness, and brain dysfunctions such as Alzheimer’s, autism, and addictions, as well as research techniques and medical technology.
The IBB is a neuroscience competition for high school students, and the competition was first held in the USA in 1998.
The competition takes place over Friday to Saturday 8-9 August, and forms part of the American Psychological Association’s 2014 convention.
There are now more than 30 countries with national brain bee championships on six continents.
