Taking the leap to become a group leader: skills required to start your own lab

Thursday, 23rd March 2:30–4:30pm, followed by a social mixer.

Is your goal to stay in academia and to become a group leader?

When is a good time to make the transition from postdoctoral training to running your own lab?

How to manage multiple projects and still keep the focus?

How can I become an inspiring supervisor? What are the most effective ways of supervising students?

If you have been asking yourself these questions, then this workshop is for you!

After the success of the first two Career Development workshops last year, the QBI ECR committee is announcing the third Career Development workshop that focuses on the transition from postdoctoral level to a group leader position. During the academic training, PhD students and postdocs learn skills which are essential in research and make up a foundation of who they are as scientists. For many, an obvious next step is gaining independence and establishing their own research group. However, it is often unclear what the necessary steps are for a successful transition from being a postdoc to becoming a group leader and when to make this step. This workshop will cover key aspects that are important for such a transition to becoming a group leader. Through sharing their personal experience, three invited speakers will discuss different topics:

  • Kerstin Fritsches, the founder of ‘PostdocTraining’, will discuss how working smarter, instead of harder, can enhance productivity.
  • Greg Monteith, a Professor at the School of Pharmacy will talk about effective supervision of students
  • Victor Callan, a Professor at the UQ Business School, will focus on leadership skills.

The workshop will be followed by a Social Mixer to network with the speakers and invited young group leaders in a friendly and relaxed setting.

For more details on the program check the flyer attached. This event is hosted by QBI ECR committee, open to all ECRs at UQ. For catering purposes, please RSVP before March 17 by e-mail to: contact-ecr@qbi.uq.edu.au.

We look forward seeing you all there!

About Early Career Researcher Events

The ECR committee organises a variety of events throughout the year.  These include regular PhD student and postdoctoral researcher social meetings (SPAM), career development workshops, postdoctoral researcher breakfasts, and contributing to the organisation of the UQ ECR symposium.

QBI regularly hosts nationally and internationally recognised neuroscience researchers to present a seminar and meet with ECRs. A full list of the seminar series is available. ECRs can elect to have lunch in a small-group setting with the seminar speaker immediately after the seminar.
