Gender equality
- Workplace Gender Equality Agency: The Workplace Gender Equality Agency is an Australian Government statutory agency that promotes and improves workplace gender equality and administers the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 (Act). Useful resources include the gender strategy toolkit, the gender equitable recruitment and promotion guide, workplace flexibility strategy toolkit, quick guide to designing an equitable renumeration policy and more. The Agency produces publications that draw on both the data and academic research to investigate both the causes and impacts of gender inequality.
- SAGE Pilot of Athena SWAN: A list of resources to help develop evidence-based diversity and inclusion initiatives in your organisational unit.
- Best practice recruitment guidelines to fast forward the advancement of women in Australian university executive appointments (PDF, 853 KB): A set of gender equality recruitment guidelines developed by UAEW Group and Fisher Leadership to redress the under-representation of women in senior executive appointments in the Australian university sector.
- Universities Australia Women: Universities Australia Women brings together Australia’s 39 comprehensive universities to promote gender equality and improve the status of women in higher education. Resources include: tips to improve gender equality in the awards system, sponsorship guide, best practice recruitment guidelines, unconscious bias guidelines, the Women Count report (PDF, 1.1MB) and videos of interviews with senior university executives addressing questions that a mentee or aspiring leader might ask a mentor or sponsor.
- VIDEO INTERVENTIONS FOR DIVERSITY IN STEM: VIDS consists of two sets of short videos that expose participants to empirical results from published gender bias research.
- Women, Careers and Universities: Where to From Here? (PDF, 1.2 MB): Published in 2016, this research paper provides deep insight into the gendered nature of employment, working conditions and career patterns of university staff, with emphasis on key points in the career life cycle.
- It starts with us - The Leadership Shadow: This simple management model suggests actions and behaviours that are most likely to support progress in gender diversity. It will help managers listen, learn and lead by example by understanding the impact of their personal actions.
- Mentoring for Change (PDF, 1.4MB): This paper begins by defining mentoring and providing a brief overview of mentoring programs within the Australian Higher Education sector. It then examines some of the key criticisms of mentoring programs, with a particular emphasis on gender and power. Keeping these criticisms in mind the paper offers a framework for differentiating between mentoring approaches, provides case study materials to highlight examples of good and innovative practice, explores program design, identifies useful resources and publications and includes an extensive bibliography for those wishing to explore mentoring in greater depth.
- Mapping the Maze: Getting More Women to the Top (PDF, 853 KB): A report by the group on Women In Research Decision Making (WIRDEM) established by the European Commission. The report examines and describes in detail nomination procedures, obstacles, facts and funding limitations that women need to overcome in their academic careers.

- Global gender disparities in science: A bibliometric analysis confirming that gender imbalances persist in research output worldwide.
- Leadership Tips for Women: Leadership lessons from the EMBO Female Leaders in Science course.
- Why women leave academia and why universities should be worried: Following the results of a longitudinal study with Chemistry PhD students in the UK, this article explores the reasons why young women scientists leave academia in far greater numbers than men.
Motherhood
- Mind Matters: Back to Work After a Baby: A two part series on the experience of mum-scientists returning to work. "Back to Work" (Part 1) focuses on sources of physical and emotional stress on new mums when they return to work including not being physically or emotionally ready to return to work, a lack of focus at work, adjusting to new child-care arrangements, breastfeeding concerns, struggling to achieve balance and struggling to stay off the 'mommy track'. Part 2 focuses on adaptations women and their institutions can make to minimise stress and maximise productivity.
- A Case Study of a Mom-Scientist: Canopy Meg: An article on Dr. Margaret Dalzwell Lowman (AKA Canopy Meg) and her decision to mesh motherhood with a nascent career as an environmental biologist.
- Scientists as Parents: A Science Careers Feature on the oft-competing responsibilities of being a parent, having a career and having a partnership.
- Pregnancy and the Lab--Feature Index: A Science Careers Feature on female scientists and pregnancy.
- Mothers in Science: 64 Ways to have it all: The aim of this book is to illustrate, graphically, that it is perfectly possible to combine a successful and fulfilling career in research science with motherhood, and that there are no rules about how to do this. On each page you will find a timeline showing on one side, the career path of a research group leader in academic science, and on the other side, important events in her family life. Each contributor has also provided a brief text about their research and about how they have combined their career and family commitments.
Sexuality, gender and sex
- Pride in Diversity is the national not-for-profit employer support program for LGBTQ workplace inclusion specialising in HR, organisational change and workplace diversity. Pride in Diversity publishes the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), Australia’s national benchmarking instrument for LGBTQ workplace inclusion from which Top Employers for LGBTQ people is determined.
- Let's Talk Gender (staff login required) (PDF, 1.8 MB): This publication has been developed for LGBTI inclusive workplaces seeking to better understand the complexities of gender. It has been designed to challenge us on our definition of gender diversity and pose questions that will make us question the way we design our forms, our processes and our diversity practice. This publication will be particularly useful for HR Managers, Diversity Leaders and LGBTI employee networks.
- A Managers Guide to LGBTI Workplace Inclusion (staff login required) (PDF, 2.6 MB), has been designed to provide Executives, Managers, People Leaders, Supervisors, Team Leaders and Line Managers (anybody with people management responsibility) with an understanding of why LGBTI inclusion is so important and what the organisational expectations are of you as a leader within your organisation.
- Pride in Diversity Employers’ Guide to Intersex Inclusion (PDF, 956KB): This guide for employers, business managers, Diversity and HR Professionals aims to introduce intersex and provide practical assistance to help build intersex inclusive practice.
- Supporting Employees Affected by the Debate on Marriage Equality (PDF, 918.7 KB)
- LGBTI Inclusion: Walking in Rainbow Shoes (staff login required): A 10 minute module developed by Pride in Diversity and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. The short module enables broader training reach, and assists in raising awareness about LGBTIQIA+ inclusion, particularly in the workplace.
- Trans @ Work from the Queensland Human Rights Commission provides information on how to develop and maintain an inclusive workplace for trans people.
- Homophobia in the Workplace (PDF, 1.1MB) is a resource for identifying, preventing and removing homophobia in the workplace.

Disability
- Web accessibility at UQ: Information on web accessibility at UQ. UQ aims for a minimum level AA as defined by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) which provides a wide range of recommendations for making web content more accessible to users with disabilities.
- Employer Toolkit: This Toolkit includes a wide range of resources that cover key areas of disability employment, and how to support it in your workplace. You will find short videos, text-based information and case studies to demonstrate how disability employment can work for you.
- JobAccess is an Australian Government service that provides free information and advice about workplace solutions for employers and employees with a disability, including reasonable adjustments, disclosure of disability, disability employment case studies, tools and checklists.
- Australian Network on Disability provides a number of resources that help organisations increase the accessibility of information for and experiences of people with a disability.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
- Universities Australia undertake a broad range of initiatives to improve higher education participation and success by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, and to deepen Australians’ understanding of Indigenous knowledges and cultures.
- ACGR Good Practice Guidelines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Education (PDF, 2.3 MB): This document acknowledges the crucial contribution that Indigenous graduate research candidates make to Australia’s research agenda and recognises the importance of encouraging and supporting Indigenous people to undertake HDR training. These guidelines provide credible, constructive and practical advice for candidates, supervisors, universities and other stakeholders.
- Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is a world-renowned research, collections and publishing organisation. AIATSIS promotes knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.
- National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC) advocates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander access, scholarships and research in higher education.
- Reconciliation Australia is the national peak body for reconciliation across Australia.
Cultural and linguistic diversity
- Managing Cultural Diversity toolkit from the Australian Multicultural Foundation provides a comprehensive overview of how to effectively manage cultural diversity in the workplace.
- Beyond Blue's Invisible Discrimination campaign addresses the impact that racism has in the workplace, and provides resources on how to prevent this from occurring.
- Australian Human Rights Commission explains the Racial Discrimination Act, the background of the legislation, the impacts of racism, some case studies and other useful links.
- Introducing Intercultural Communication: Global Cultures and Contexts: An introductory textbook on intercultural communication.
- Stigma and exclusion in cross-cultural contexts. The papers in this special issue arise from a one-day symposium held at the University of Queensland in February 2013. The symposium, ‘Stigma and Exclusion in Cross-Cultural Contexts’, brought together researchers and community-based practitioners from across Australia and overseas to explore marginalization, discriminatory discourses and stigma in a wide range of historical and cross-cultural settings.
Discrimination, harassment and bullying
- Australian Human Rights Commission’s workplace discrimination, harassment and bullying information: provides information for employers to prevent discrimination, harassment and bullying from occurring in the workplace.
- Fair Work Commission’s anti-bullying information. This website contains information about what bullying at work is, who can apply for an order to stop bullying at work, and the process to follow.
- Queensland Human Rights Commission’s discrimination in employment guidelines
Inclusion
- Beyond Diversity Towards Inclusion: Resources developed by the Diversity Council Australia to help improve inclusive practice in the workforce. Diversity Council Australia also provides research, events and programs, curated resources and expert advice across all diversity dimensions.
- Diversity Is Just the First Step. Inclusion Comes Next: A review of a survey completed by Boston Consulting Group on inclusion in the workplace. The publication highlights that well-intentioned efforts to recruit and hire a diverse workforce are only beneficial if the organisational culture ensures that all employees feel included and appreciated.
- Why Is Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace Important? A blog post from Great Place To Work addressing the difference between diversity and inclusion and why they are important in the workplace. "An inclusive workplace doesn’t just have a diversity of people present, it has a diversity of people involved, developed, empowered and trusted by the business."
- Diversity wins: How inclusion matters: A report from McKinsey & Company investigating the business case for diversity. The report shows that for diverse companies, the likelihood of outperforming industry peers on profitability has increased over time, while the penalties are getting steeper for those lacking diversity. Progress on representation has been slow, yet a few firms are making real strides. A close look at these diversity winners shows that a systematic, business-led approach and bold, concerted action on inclusion are needed to make progress.
