QBI group leader Professor Mandyam Srinivasan has been named an inaugural Queensland Government Science Champion.
Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts, The Hon Ian Walker MP announced Professor Srinivasan as a Science Champion for his work developing biologically inspired technology.
The Champions awards include Science, Innovation and Culture.
“These champions are the people who will be the leaders of industry,” Mr Walker said.
“The first Science and Innovation Champions are great examples … Professor Mandyam Srinivasan, for designing robotic aircrafts based on the flight behaviour of bees and birds.”
Professor Mandyam Srinivasan runs the Neuroscience of Vision and Aerial Robotics laboratory at QBI and said he was honoured to be included on the list.
“This recognition provides validation that our research is heading in the right direction and that we’ll be able to deliver tangible outcomes,” Professor Srinivasan said.
“It is also a wonderful opportunity to promote science in the public arena and to encourage younger scientists in Queensland to compete for the award.”
Professor Srinivasan was named as one of only two Science Champions, alongside another researcher from The University of Queensland, Professor Mark Kendall from the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.
