Research Scholarships

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Scholarships

About this scholarship

These scholarships include a living stipend to support you as you complete a research project for your Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy or a research-focused professional doctorate at UQ.

Eligibility

You’re eligible if you’re:

  • an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • studying full-time and onshore in Australia
  • nominated by an enrolling school or institute at UQ
  • assessed by the Graduate School as meeting all conditions for admission to the higher degree by research program.

Additionally, you must not:

  • hold a qualification at the same or a higher level than the higher degree by research program you are undertaking
  • be receiving a living allowance award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate to undertake the higher degree by research program
  • be receiving a Commonwealth-funded tuition fee scholarship

Poche Centre for Indigenous Health Research Top-Up Scholarships

About this scholarship

The UQ Poche Centre brings together Indigenous and health expertise across the University, and works collaboratively with Indigenous community organisations and health providers, on improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Centre has two key areas of focus:

  • developing a skilled and available workforce in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; and
  • improving urban Indigenous health outcomes across the life course.

Study for the scholarship must be targeted at improving health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in an urban setting.

Applicants are expected to:

  • Undertake research that responds to needs identified by Indigenous communities and aims to improve urban Indigenous health outcomes across the life course, from maternal and child health, through adolescence to the challenges of chronic disease and ageing, with a major focus on prevention and education.
  • Produce research, in collaboration with primary health care providers, which translates to immediate outcomes for Indigenous communities.

This scholarship is awarded via a competitive scholarship process, but applicants can apply at any time. The scholarship will remain open until all scholarships are filled.

  • an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • assessed by the Graduate School as meeting all conditions for admission to the higher degree by research program.
  • the recipient of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Scholarship

The Kym Broadhurst Bursary for the Visually Impaired

About this scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 and is maintained by gifts from the family of Kym Broadhurst, to encourage excellence in undergraduate or postgraduate study for visually impaired students.

Eligibility

You're eligible if you:

  • are visually impaired (corrected vision must be less than 6:60)
  • enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate program

E.O.H. Handy Memorial Scholarship

About this scholarship

This scholarship was founded in 1995 by a bequest under the will of Maisie Elizabeth Handy in memory of her late husband E.O.H. Handy.

Eligibility

You're eligible if you are:

  • an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • enrolled in a program at The University of Queensland

CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship (China Scholarship Council)

About this scholarship

The China Scholarship Council is a non-profit institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education. The CSC is responsible for the organisation, management and provision of financial resources for Chinese citizens studying abroad, and to international students studying in China.

The CSC Scholarship covers:

  • living allowance
  • health insurance in Australia
  • one return airfare from China to Australia and
  • your Australian Student Visa application fees

Successful applicants who are offered a place in the University’s PhD program and are supported by their School will also receive a Tuition Fee Scholarship that covers your PhD tuition fees for 4 years.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to both future PhD students and current students in the first year of their PhD.

Current students can use their original offer of admission in their application and will need to apply through CSC (follow the CSC dates).

To apply for this scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China;
  • be eligible to receive an Australian Student Visa;
  • satisfy the selection criteria set by the CSC;
  • satisfy UQ’s admissions entry requirement and be offered a place in the PhD program; and
  • meet the University’s English proficiency requirement

 

Endeavour Foundation Inclusive Research Award

About this scholarship

The Endeavour Foundation Disability Research Fund aims to benefit Australians with disability, especially people with an intellectual or developmental disability.

Objectives

To fund an inclusive research project to advance the health, wellbeing and life experiences of people with a disability, in particular people with an intellectual disability.

Eligibility

You're eligible if you:

  • are conducting a Masters or PhD program of research at an Australian university, under the supervision of suitably qualified supervisors
  • meet the entry requirements for a higher degree by research
