A Grey Matter: New season, new conversations in 2025

UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute’s podcast, A Grey Matter, is back for 2025. Plug in your headphones and join us as we unpack the mysteries of the brain through new conversations, inspiring stories, and the latest discoveries in neuroscience.

This year’s season dives into some of the biggest questions, from gene therapy as a potential treatment for motor neurone disease to what happens to our brain under general anaesthesia. You’ll hear from leading and emerging researchers, each sharing their knowledge and insights in an accessible, engaging way with host Rebecca Archer.

If you’re curious about how new technologies, such as super resolution microscopy or Virtual Reality, are transforming research, or want to understand the latest thinking around brain health, this season has something for you.

A Grey Matter is designed for everyone, from students and health professionals to lifelong learners and anyone fascinated by the brain. Each episode aims to break down complex science into conversations that are informative and thought-provoking.

Episode 1: Getting inside bipolar disorder

The podcast highlights QBI’s mission to improve lives through a deeper understanding of the brain in health and disease. In the first episode, we explore the intersection of mental health research and lived experience.

Join Associate Professor Susannah Tye and Heather Cruickshank, whose personal journey has shaped her scientific inquiry into bipolar disorder, as they discuss research that’s leading to more effective treatments for this complex and often misunderstood mental health condition.

Please note that this episode contains discussions about suicidal ideation, which some listeners may find distressing. If you or someone you know is affected by these kinds of issues, we encourage you to seek support from professional services.
