Chronic Neuroinflammation in TBI: Mechanisms, Biomarkers, and Long-Term Outcomes

Speaker: Dr Sarah Hellewell
Senior Research Fellow in Neurotrauma, Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science / Deputy Research Group Head, Neurotrauma, Faculty of Health Sciences – Curtin University
Chronic Neuroinflammation in TBI: Mechanisms, Biomarkers, and Long-Term Outcomes
In this session, Dr Sarah Hellewell unpacks the mechanisms underpinning chronic neuroinflammation after TBI, including microglial activation and systemic immune changes, and examines the evidence for persistent immune activation beyond the acute injury phase. She will explore how blood-based biomarkers are advancing our capacity to identify risk and inform prognosis, and what the intersection of TBI, ageing, and neurodegeneration means for individuals over the longer term, before closing with the translational implications for therapeutic targeting and future research directions.
