Does developmental myelination shape neural network formation?
Abstract: Myelination of the developing CNS is a highly coordinated and precisely timed process, yet we know very little about how this process influences neural network formation. Abnormal myelin content is a feature of many neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders in which neural network function and information processing is also disturbed, though it is unclear which is cause or effect. We are seeking to untangle this by first, determining whether the onset of myelination helps shape the formation of functional neural networks in the developing brain. We have developed a zebrafish model of “delayed” developmental myelination and using whole brain calcium imaging, show that mistiming of myelination leads to subtle changes in neural network dynamics in the larval zebrafish brain.
