Human trial finds ultrasound treatment for dementia is safe

16 Dec 2025

UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute researchers showed scanning ultrasound is safe and well-tolerated in a first-in-human pilot study—an important step toward Alzheimer’s disease treatments.

“We found it was fast, safe, and well tolerated, which is very encouraging and opens the door to further human studies,” Professor Peter Nestor said.

“Although the aim of this study was to assess the safety of the technique, there were some encouraging signs that the treatment may possibly help with some of the behavioural problems that can emerge in Alzheimer’s disease, which will be explored in a new trial."

We congratulate Professor Nestor and Professor Jürgen Götz for leading this significant trial and paving the way for future innovation in dementia research.
